Happy Hump Day, Blogging Peeps! It is hard to believe that we are halfway through August already. It has been a great summer, but I truly cannot wait for fall. I LOVE that time of year where the weather gets a little crisp at night but is still warm during the day, the leaves start turning gold and red, and the smell of fresh school supplies fills the local Target…. 🙂 Oh, and just as an aside, can you believe that I saw HALLOWEEN CANDY at the grocery store yesterday? I mean, really, I love fall just as much as the next person, but really? Halloween candy in August?
On another note, I am officially a “soccer mom”. My 5 year old daughter started soccer on Monday. Why do I suddenly feel competitive and have the desire to look hotter than the other moms on the sidelines? What is up with that? Anyone else get that way when their kids started sports?
So, Fitness Cheerleader has made us ponder this today: What is something you always think “what if?” about? It immediately brought me back to college and how right after I graduated, I thought long and hard about going to graduate school. I wanted to be a research statistics professor and needed my PhD to do it. I decided against it though because at the time, what I wanted most was to delve into the workforce and move out of my parent’s house. So, I found a job at a Contract Research Organization (a company that is outsourced by big pharma to do their R&D for them) and started immediately.
I sat in a cubicle that was absolutely FREEZING cold (I would type with fingerless gloves on sometimes) and would enter data from 8:30 until leaving at 5 every day. I had a beautiful commute – for those of you familiar with Pennsylvania, the company was located right by New Hope, a small town that has a lot of really cute shops and restaraunts. I loved being in the workforce and I loved where I worked. What I also loved was looking at the cute guy that worked in Regulatory who would pass by my desk every now and then. He always looked so cool and confident and was really well dressed. My relationship at the time was with my high school sweetheart. We had gotten back together after 10 years and I was quickly remembering why we had broken up the first time. We were just very different people with very different worldviews. Fast forward a few months later, I had been promoted to a job that required me to travel a lot and I was in Phoenix with a few colleagues. I had broken up with my high school guy and was not really looking to start something new. We were at a dinner one night and my colleague and I were talking about guys that we thought were attractive in our office back in PA. She said, “Well, I know someone who thinks that YOU are cute!” And she named HIM. The guy from Regulatory that would cruise past my desk months earlier. And I nearly FELL OFF MY CHAIR! The day I got back to the office, I saw him in the parking lot and invited him to join a few of us for drinks at Happy Hour. The rest of the story results in a gorgeous engagement on a mountain top in Vermont, a gorgeous wedding in Bethlehem, PA and 2 amazing children.
Every now and then, while I am washing dishes and looking out the window into the yard, I catch a glimpse of my husband on the tractor mowing the lawn and I get this overwhelming feeling of “WOW!” Did I really end up with this amazing man that I drooled over for months? How lucky am I??? And then I think to myself, Graduate School? Research Professor? Heck no, that would not have been better than the life I am living now…..
Things always work out for a reason….
